Healing & Prayer

Order of Saint Luke the Physician

The International Order of St. Luke the Physician is a Christian healing ministry and fellowship of professionals in all phases of medical work, clergy from Roman, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant Churches, and lay people from all walks of life who believe that the healing ministry of Jesus Christ belongs in the church today. Since its inception in 1932, members of the Order of St. Luke (OSL) have devoted themselves to conducting healing missions at home and abroad — lecturing, teaching and praying for those ill in body and soul.

The first step to full membership in the Order is to become an associate member by completing a series of seven weekly classes. These classes are taught annually at First Presbyterian Church by Margaret Gieselmann, an OSL convener and church member. Participants study the ramifications of healing in the lives of those who knew Jesus as His followers, subsequent Christians, and those involved in healing ministries today. Participants will deepen their prayer life and listening skills. After six months of associate membership, prayer and further study, one may apply for full membership.

Service of Healing & Wholeness

Offered on the first Sunday of every month, at 4:00 PM in Price Chapel, this service focuses specifically on emotional and spiritual wellness. The service includes the Sacrament of Holy Communion and, for those who desire it, anointing with oil.

Healing Prayers

We know God heals … in His own time and according to His will. A special time for healing prayers is offered in Price Chapel every month on the third Sunday, immediately following the final worship service. If you or someone you know longs for healing — in body, mind or spirit — members of the Order of St. Luke are ready to intercede on your behalf.

Prayer Ministry

Those with the spiritual gift of intercession earnestly and faithfully lift up the needs of the church and its members on a regular basis. To share a personal or family concern for which you desire prayer support, complete a “Prayer Request Card” at the Welcome Desk, or call the church office at any time, and your need will be relayed to the prayer chain members.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

In 1998, Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo gave birth to a ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace ... through knitted or crocheted prayer shawls. Whether they are called prayer shawls, comfort shawls, peace shawls or mantles, the creator begins each shawl with prayers and blessings for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. And when the shawl is completed, a final blessing is prayed over it before it is sent on its way. Prayer shawls may be used as a comfort while undergoing medical procedures, during illness and recovery, through times of bereavement, and for many other ministry possibilities.

If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, drop in at the next meeting (held at the church on the first Thursday of every month, 10:00 AM in Price Parlor). You do not have to be a knitter or know how to crochet! Just bring a prayerful heart and Christ will work through your healing hands. And if you know of someone you think should receive a Prayer Shawl, contact (239-992-3233 X244) in the church office.
