June 2021 Memory Verse

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. Romans 8:29

Our memory verse for June is prefaced wisely by the Apostle Paul as he writes in Romans 8:28: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Paul is not implying that all things that happen are good. In contrast, believing in God’s wisdom, power, and love for us is also knowing that God always works for the good of His people. We are also reminded of this in Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

There are many trials and tribulations in our lives that are not wanted, expected, fair, or deserved. Yet it is our faith and trust in our heavenly Father that carries us through. As we are called according to His purpose, we know that everything He allows is to mold and guide us through our faith journey. For if we are to share God’s glory, we must also share His suffering. Then, as Paul says in Romans 8:38-39, nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God promises many things when we choose to accept and be in Christ. In Romans 8:29, we are called to exercise our will and trust in Christ for salvation. Knowing the promises of God comforts us, and trusting in His Word helps us to overcome our fears and temptations and to better discern life decisions, be they big or small.

Though God has given Christians the gift of free will, we need to recognize that our decisions are not implemented within our exclusive control, nor are they absolute. It also does not indicate that God is not in full control. God has a plan and a purpose for each one of us. Many factors influence our decisions. Most importantly, the Spirit of God that lives within us is continually transforming us to fulfill His purpose. Transformation occurs when God’s Word and His Spirit access our will, impacting the decisions we make. “I the LORD search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards according to what their actions deserve” (Jeremiah 17:10).

As Christians, we are to listen and follow the Holy Spirit as our spiritual guide. We are to follow Christ’s way to be saved and to fulfill God’s purpose for us. We are to remain humble and abandon our sinful ways to be in right standing with God.
