In this issue, we read about some harmful worldviews and hopefully see the truth in a biblical worldview. But how do we build a biblical worldview in our families? Sadly, parents, I don’t have a silver bullet. The only way to build a biblical worldview is to read and understand the Scriptures together. Here are some helpful ways to begin or continue to build a biblical worldview for your family.

  1.  Start today. There is no reason to wait. You don’t need to purchase any special equipment or add yet another subscription to your list. We have the great privilege in America of being able to access the Bible in many formats for free! The Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts are great starting points for families. The New Living Translation is a very accessible translation. An entire chapter may be challenging initially, so try reading one section each night.
  2. Do your homework. Most parents spend a great deal of time researching, strategizing, and planning for just about everything related to their kids to ensure a positive experience. It is no different when it comes to the Bible. You can find great overviews of New Testament books and some of the major characters in the Old Testament on our Life Academy website. The Bible Project is also a great resource that is available on YouTube.
  3. Make it a habit. Instilling discipline is our responsibility as parents, but don’t make it a daily drudgery. The Bible is the greatest story ever told; it deserves to be read as such. Use different voices, ask questions, and allow the Bible to transform your children’s worldview.
  4. Worship together. First Church is a biblically-centered church and affords a wonderful opportunity for your family to be inspired, encouraged, and transformed by God and His Word. On Wednesday nights, the entire family is invited to our Family Nights where all ages study the same passage of Scripture in age-appropriate groups.
  5. Limit unhealthy worldviews. Most parents would not willingly put their children in danger, but many are unwittingly putting their children at risk by giving them unfettered access to electronic devices. These devices don’t just harmlessly provide entertainment, information, or a distraction; they can warp and distort the worldview of young, impressionable children. Most devices allow parental controls or monitoring. Use them wisely to protect your children.

A biblical worldview doesn’t just happen; it must be built. May you build a biblical world-view for your family, trusting in and relying upon the Holy Spirit.
