The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. -Hebrews 1:3

He Carries Us Through

The Epistle to the Hebrews was written in 70 A.D. to the Hebrew Christians born and raised in Jewish traditions and Old testament covenant. After a few decades of living this new faith, their enthusiasm was beginning to wane as Christianity was being challenged religiously, socially, and politically. So many had believed and expected that Jesus’ return was imminent, not yet understanding the presence and power of His Holy Spirit. Many were falling back into their Judaic customs and were tempted to turn away from Christ to avoid further persecution and suffering.

The purpose of this letter and the message found in Hebrews 1:3 is that the person of Jesus and the New Covenant He represents is far superior to Mosaic law. Faith in the Son of God would overcome all threats and doubts; it is the better way. As the perfect High Priest, Christ’s sacrifice alone provides an eternal inheritance to those who believe.

Let’s take a closer look at Hebrews 1:3 (emphasis added).

The Son [Jesus] is the radiance [the glowing light of God is reflected in Him] of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being [“I and the Father are one” (John 10:30); “Be still and know that I Am God” (Psalm 46:10)]; sustaining all things [“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8)] by his powerful word [The Lord merely spoke and the heavens were created; He breathed the word and all the stars were born (Psalm 33:6); In the beginning was the Word [Jesus], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1)].

After he had provided purification for sins [“I AM the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6)], he sat down at the right hand [symbolic in ancient times, the king’s proclaimed delegate would sit at his right side; he was bestowed with all the sovereign power, authority, dignity, and omnipotence of the king; this is referenced in Genesis 41:41: So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”] of the Majesty in heaven [the source of special revelation].

Message to us: Jesus asks us to be steadfast in His covenant and have faith no matter the trials and tribulations we face today. He promises that He is standing by our side, ready to carry us through all challenges into heaven’s eternal life.
