First Church Art Gallery | December 1-24

Who is St. Nicholas? Discover the life and legend of the man we know as Santa Claus through this festive, fun, and educational Christmas exhibit. It tells the story of the Bishop of Myra, turkey, who was imprisoned, tortured, and died for the faith around 350 AD. Considered the patron saint of children, St. Nicholas is one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox tradition.

Our December exhibit is provided by the St. Nicholas Center in Holland, Michigan. This non-profit is committed to helping restore balance to an increasingly materialistic and stressful Christmas season through the saint’s example of faithful living. The family-friendly panels each reflect an aspect of his life, telling various stories and legends, showing how he has influenced faith traditions and customs around the world, and even describing his transformation from Nicholas to today’s Santa Claus. Hands-on activities for children include wood-mounted puzzles, paper miter-folding, and three rubbing plates.

“As a cultural icon, he reaches beyond the church into the culture. Discovering the truth about Santa Claus—a person of faith whose love for God led to concern for the needy and vulnerable—can assist those searching for more meaning in the often stressful and frantic holiday seasons. St. Nicholas helps us all to focus beyond ourselves.”*
