“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” -John 16: 33

In an insignificant village, in the winter months, a small child was born virtually unnoticed by the world. Placed in a lowly manger, visited only by shepherds, there was not much to foretell the importance of this event. Little did the world know that this single birth would, in fact, change the course of humanity forever. In just over three years of ministry, our Christian faith was established and has flourished ever since.

The Jewish people expected a warrior king who would free them from Roman bondage and would rule the world with justice and compassion as the prophets predicted. He certainly couldn’t be the son of a carpenter from a very insignificant place such as Nazareth. They overlooked the prophecies that said He would be a meek, suffering servant who would be rejected and killed. They were given a gentle Messiah, who through love and forgiveness would teach the world that love conquers conflict; but in turn, they would reject and kill Him.

In today’s reading, Jesus is nearing the end of His time here on earth and giving final instructions to His disciples. Upon His departure they would be expected to spread the good news. He warns of hardships and pain, but assures them, and us, He will prevail! The reward will be the joy of salvation for His followers and spending eternity in His presence.

During Advent as we are surrounded by decorations, presents, and glitter, it is most important to step back and search for the true meaning of Christmas hidden among all the extraneous noise.

Christ is our Savior; He lives, and salvation is ours as His followers!

Therefore, we wait in anticipation to celebrate the birth of our Savior knowing that, in spite of the trials we experience today, our future is secure in Him who has conquered death. He has truly overcome the world. What could offer more peace or be more reassuring?
