The 90+ Ministry is a newly developing Deacon ministry that focuses caring attention on the oldest members of our faith community. This initiative started in late 2019 as we identified 147 First Church members, aged 90 and older, and proceeded to evaluate the role our church plays in their lives and to assess how we can better support them as a church family.

After completing the initial study, we are pleased to report that direct contact with our oldest parishioners identified positive feedback concerning the role of First Church in their lives. Most appear to love where they reside and to love our church. They had very positive things to say about our pastors, their leadership, and our church’s Bible-based focus.

We recognize that the needs of this particular age group are often driven by changes in certain circumstances: where they live and their living conditions, their health, and eventual second-person oversight protection. Our study made it clear that maintaining personal contact may be difficult with this age group. As a result, we are developing a unique process to ensure that our efforts to stay connected with them are successful.

Our goal is to intentionally show our concern for each member of our 90+ community and to ensure that all are recognized. As believers, we depend on each other, and we know that we are best supported through our Christian community. Living for Christ is a continual opportunity, and in this case, we must never forget to encourage those believers who have been actively involved in building and supporting this church. Let us remember what the psalmist wrote:

I have been like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. My mouth is filled with your praise and with your glory all day long. Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength is spent. (Psalm 71: 7-9, NRSV)

By reaching out to our congregants in this special demographic, we show the true character and kindness of Christ. We also demonstrate the purpose of our faith community—to uphold and sustain those we must not forsake or forget. As disciples of Christ, we have the hearts and minds to care for those who are deeply in need of our attention and encouragement.
