When the Pew Research Center (a nonpartisan fact tank) began tracking internet adoption in early 2000, only 14% of seniors used the internet. Today, 67% say they go online and about 51% have high-speed internet at home.

About 58% of seniors say technology has had a mostly positive effect on society and incorporate digital technology into their everyday lives.

Smartphone use among adults ages 65 and up has nearly quadrupled in the last five years—about four-in-ten (42%), up from just 18% in 2013. Today, 34% of American seniors use social media sites like Facebook or Twitter, up from 27% in 2013.

The over 65 segment is now driving growth while other age groups have plateaued completely.
