God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way, and the mountains fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Psalm 46:1-3

This psalm begins by declaring that God is our refuge and strength and assures us that He is ever-present in our troubles. He does not abandon us but is consistently present to help us when we most need Him. The psalmist, inspired by God, writes of frightful earthly disasters similar to what many people in Southwest Florida recently experienced with Hurricane Ian. It is notable and encouraging that the psalmist precedes the verses about disasters with, “Therefore, we will not fear.”

While many people question why God allows destruction and perhaps question God’s existence because of calamities, Scripture reminds us that God never fails to be present in our trials. Because He is present, we do not need to fear. His promised presence is the hope upon which we stand. In further verses, we read of nations in turmoil and kingdoms that are falling, and we are immediately reminded, “The LORD Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:7).

If you are struggling to make sense of life’s difficulties, let me encourage you. Remember God’s promises to us from Scripture: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). Call on Him and be strengthened in His presence!

Has your spirit been wounded? We know that Jesus is our Great Physician and it is by His wounds that we are healed (1 Peter 2:24). He has also promised never to leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Call on Him and be healed by His presence!

Are you struggling with anxiety? Remember Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Exchange your anxiety for God’s peace. Call on Him and be renewed through His presence!

Are you questioning God’s love for you? Meditate on Romans 8:35-39 and remind yourself that life’s perils can never sever God’s love for you. Be confident that your Creator loves you with everlasting love and with lovingkindness He has drawn you to Himself (Jeremiah 31:3).

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens” (Psalm 68:19).

Call on Him and find courage, healing, strength, and love!
